McPhee helps Stanford women hold off UCLA

McPhee helps Cardinal stop recent slide; Cal opens Pac-12 play with a victory over USC

Brittany McPhee scored 12 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter to help Stanford to a 76-65 upset of No. 11 UCLA on Friday night in a Pac-12 Conference opener at Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal (7-6) on Monday fell out of The Associated Press women’s basketball Top 25 for the first time since the 2001 season, ending a streak of 312 consecutiv­e ranked weeks. Stanford had lost three of four, including losses to Top-10 teams Baylor and Tennessee, and entered conference play with its worst 12-game start since the 1998-99 season.

Alanna Smith added 14 points and 13 rebounds for Stanford. Nadia Fingall chipped in 10 points.

Jordin Canada led UCLA (9-3) with 20 points, and Kennedy Burke and Japreece Dean had 14 points apiece.

CAL 76, USC 64 >> Kristine Anigwe tallied her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and the No. 20 Bears rolled to their seventh straight win, beating the visiting Trojans in the Pac-12 opener for both teams. Penina Davidson scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter for Cal (10-2), which beat USC (10-2) for the third straight time. Minyon Moore scored 14 points and had five assists for USC. OREGON STATE 89, WASHINGTON STATE 56 >> Ruthy Hebard and Sabrina Ionescu scored 25 points each to lead the 10th-ranked Ducks (12-2) in a Pac-12 opener. Oregon won its first Pac-12 opener in coach Kelly Graves’ fourth season in Eugene.

Men

KANSAS 92, TEXAS 86 >> Devonte’ Graham had 23 points and eight assists, converting six 3-point baskets, and the No. 11 Jayhawks (11-2) opened Big 12 play with a road win over the Longhorns (9-4). Sophomore Udoka Azubuike had 13 points and a career-best 13 rebounds for Kansas.

TEXAS TECH 77, BAYLOR 53 >> Keenan Evans scored 18 points, freshman Zhaire Smith added 15 in his Big 12 debut, and the No. 22 Red Raiders (12-1, 1-0 Big 12) rolled past the 18th-ranked Bears (10-3, 0-1) in the conference opener for both teams in Lubbock.

UCLA 96, WASHINGTON STATE 82 >> Aaron Holiday scored a career-high 33 points, and Jaylen Hands added 19 points to lead the Bruins (10-3) in the Pac 12 opener for both teams at Pauley Pavilion. Thomas Welsh scored 12 points and had 14 rebounds for the Bruins. Robert Franks scored 20 points for the Cougars (8-5).

OREGON STATE 76, COLORADO 57 >> Stephen Thompson Jr. scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half, and the host Beavers (9-4) won the Pac-12 opener for both teams. Tyler Bey scored 14 points for the Buffaloes (8-5), who have lost four of their past five.

UTAH 66, OREGON 56 >> Justin Bibbins scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half to lead the visiting Utes (9-3) in the Pac-12 opener for both teams. Troy Brown scored 16 points to lead Oregon (10-4), which had its 25-game home winning streak against conference teams snapped.

WASHINGTON 88, USC 81 >> Noah Dickerson scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Huskies (11-3) to their first Pac-12 road win in almost two years in the conference opener for both teams. Chimezie Metu scored 26 points, and Bennie Boatwright added 24 for USC (9-5).
