Texas caps bad day with big win

Longhorns beat TCU after learning star has cancer

Jericho Sims made a free throw with 5 seconds left, then Texas watched as TCU’s Jaylen Fisher missed a layup off the rim at the final buzzer to send the Longhorns to a 99-98 win over the 16th-ranked Horned Frogs in double overtime on Wednesday night in Austin.

Sims had missed his second free throw, and the Horned Frogs got the play they wanted with Fisher driving the lane for a point-blank layup that bounced out.

Texas got it biggest win of the season hours after the school announced that sophomore guard Andrew Jones has been diagnosed with leukemia and has started treatment. Further details on his diagnosis and condition have not been released.

TCU had rallied from 13 down in the second half and led 94-90 in the second overtime. The game was tied at 98 when Desmond Bane of TCU missed a shot and Kenrich Williams fouled Sims on the rebound.

Eric Davis scored 22 points to lead Texas (11-5, 2-2 Big 12). Williams scored 26 for TCU (13-3, 1-3). VILLANOVA 89, XAVIER 65 >> Phil Booth hit five 3s and scored 21 points, and the top-ranked Wildcats (15-1, 3-1 Big East) rolled to the home win over the 10thranked Musketeers (15-3, 3-2).

MICHIGAN STATE 76, RUTGERS

72 >> Miles Bridges ended his scoreless start with 7:43 left in regulation and finished with just 11 points to help the fourthrank­ed Spartans (16-2, 4-1 Big Ten) bounce back from a loss with an overtime victory over the Scarlet Knights (11-7, 1-4). DUKE 87, PITTSBURGH 52 >> Marvin Bagley III scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and the No. 7 Blue Devils (14-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) never trailed.

USC 70, COLORADO 58 >> Jordan McLaughlin scored 20 points and made all four of his 3-pointers for the Trojans (12-6, 3-2 Pac12).

George King led the Buffaloes (10-7, 2-3) with 21 points. The Buffs experience­d a letdown after sweeping the ranked Arizona schools at home last week.

NEW MEXICO 75, WYOMING 66>> Antino Jackson had a career-high 20 points as the host Lobos (8-10, 3-2 Mountain West) turned back the Cowboys (11-6, 2-2).

COLORADO STATE 84, UTAH STATE 75 >> Prentiss Nixon scored 26 points, and the Rams (9-9, 2-3 MW) halted a two-game skid. Sam Merrill scored 18 points to lead the Aggies (10-8, 3-2). UNLV 81, AIR FORCE 76 >> Jovan Mooring scored 15 points, including a critical 3-pointer with under 20 seconds to play, and the visiting Runnin’ Rebels (13-4, 2-2 MW) held off the Falcons (6-10, 0-4). PLAYER DENIES ALLEGATION­S >> Minnesota basketball standout Reggie Lynch “categorica­lly denies” allegation­s of sexual misconduct lodged against him by two women, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Attorney Ryan Pacyga also said at a news conference that the 23-year-old senior center never had sexual contact with either woman. The university’s equal opportunit­y Equal Opportunit­y and Affirmativ­e Action office recommende­d Lynch’s expulsion Jan. 3 after finding him responsibl­e for sexual misconduct in an alleged assault off campus April 7, 2016.

The office issued that finding the same day as a separate recommenda­tion that he be suspended and barred from campus until Aug. 1, 2020, for sexual misconduct in an unrelated incident.
