San Jose State loses 7th consecutive game

-

Caleb Martin scored 24 points, Kendall Stephens added 19 with five 3-pointers, and Nevada beat San Jose State 71-54 on Wednesday night in San Jose.

Brandon Mitchell led San Jose State (3-15, 0-7) with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Spartans have lost seven straight.

Nevada (17-3, 6-0 Mountain West) won its 15th straight conference game. VILLANOVA 88, GEORGETOWN 56 >> Top-ranked Villanova led by as many as 44 points and gave Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing a rude welcome back to the schools’ rivalry, handing the Hoyas their worst loss in more than 40 years.

Jalen Brunson led the way with 18 points and seven assists for Villanova (17-1, 5-1 Big East), which finished 17 for 33 on 3s, while Georgetown went 4 for 15.

The last time Ewing faced Villanova in any capacity was in the last game of his college playing career at Georgetown, a surprising 66-64 victory for the underdog Wildcats in the 1985 NCAA championship game. It was quite clear, quite quickly, on Wednesday that there would be no such tight outcome — nor any chance of an upset by Georgetown (12-6, 2-5). TEXAS 67, TEXAS TECH 58 >> Kerwin Roach II scored 20 points in a surprise return to the lineup and the Longhorns got another home win over a Top 25 opponent in a week, beating the No. 8 Red Raiders.

Roach, who had missed the previous two games with a hand injury.

SMU 83, WICHITA STATE 78 >> Shake Milton hit five 3-pointers and scored 33 points to end the No. 7 Shockers’ 27-game home winning streak.

WOMEN

NEVADA 91, SAN JOSE STATE 63>> Taylor Turney scored a career-high 28 points, but the Spartans were dominated on the boards 5725 by the Wolf Pack in the Lawlor Event Center. STEVENS JOINES 1,000-WIN CLUB >> Barbara Stevens of Division II Bentley became the fifth women’s basketball coach to reach 1,000 victories when her Falcons defeated Adelphi 78-66.

Stanford’s Tara Vanderveer (1,023-238) reached the 1,000-win milestone last season and is second-all-time to former Tennessee coach Pat Summit (1,098-208) in NCAA history.

BAYLOR 79, IOWA STATE 50 >> Kalani Brown scored 25 points and No. 4 Lady Bears (16-1, 6-0 Big 12) extended their winning streak to 13.
