‘Flower’ blooms in theaters one night only

Take note, fans of master Japanese animated storytelle­r Hayao Miyazaki. Even though the beloved creative mastermind behind classics such as “Spirited Away” and “Kiki’s Special Delivery Service” isn’t exactly associated with “Mary and the Witch’s Flower,” the advance buzz and trailer gives the impression that this a movie that will appeal to his legion of fans.

Fathom Events is giving anime fans a sneak preview today of “Mary and the Witch’s Flower,” with both a dubbed and subtitled version. The film not only looks gorgeous but comes from proven filmmakers with impressive resumes.

“Mary” finds a young girl meeting up with a flower that gives her some mystical powers. The hitch? It only lasts for a 24-hour cycle. And, of course, there’s a black kitty too!

The dubbed version will be shown at 7 p.m, and features the voices of Ruby Barnhill, Kate Winslet and Jim Broadbent; the subtitled version will be shown at

8 p.m. The running time is 2 hours, 5 minutes, and the film is rated PG. Screenings will be in Berkeley, San Jose, Pleasant Hill, Cupertino, Dublin and other Bay Area cities.

Director Hiromasa Yonebayash­i served as an animator on Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away,” “Ponyo” and “Howl’s Moving Castle.” He also directed the beautiful “The Secret World of Arrietty,” inspired by the children’s book “The Borrowers,” and the touching “When Marnie Was There.”
