Young helps No. 12 Sooners upset No. 5 Jayhawks

Trae Young had 26 points and nine assists to help No. 12 Oklahoma rally and beat No. 5 Kansas 85-80 on Tuesday night in Norman, Oklahoma.

Young, the nation’s leader in scoring and assists, struggled in losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma State last week. Against the Jayhawks, however, the freshman point guard made 7 of 9 field goals and 10 of 12 free throws.

“I think, tonight, I managed the game a lot better,” Young said. “I got back to the way I was playing before last week and even before K-State. I managed the game a lot better and my teammates did a great job of making plays, too.”

Christian James scored 15 points and Brady Manek added 14 for the Sooners (15-4, 5-3 Big 12), who won their 13th straight at home.

Svi Mykhailiuk scored 24 points and Malik Newman added 20 for Kansas (16-4, 6-2), which had won five straight.

NO. 1 VILLANOVA 89, PROVIDENCE 69 >> Eric Paschall scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats past the Friars in Philadelph­ia.

Villanova (19-1, 6-1 Big East), which had six players in double figures, assumed control of the game with a 22-2 run en route to a 39-30 halftime lead.

Rodney Bullock led Providence (14-7, 5-3) with 16 points.

NO. 2 VIRGINIA 61, NO. 18 CLEMSON 36 >> Devon Hall scored 14 points and Kyle Guy added 12 for the Cavaliers, who showed why their scoring defense is best in the country with their rout of the Tigers in Charlottes­ville, Virginia.

The Cavaliers (19-1, 8-0 ACC) allowed their fewest points of the season. They lead the nation in scoring defense.

Gabe DeVoe, with 11 points, was the only player in double figures for the Tigers (16-4, 5-3), who scored 13 points in the second half. NO. 4 DUKE 84, WAKE FOREST 70>> Wendell Carter Jr. had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils Duke to a road win over The Demon Deacons.

Marvin Bagley III added 16 points and 11 rebounds for Duke (18-2, 6-2 ACC), which built a 20-point lead with its defense and kept Wake Forest at arm’s length the rest of the way.

Duke matched a season high by forcing 21 turnovers — 15 in the first half — and turning them into 34 points.

Doral Moore had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Demon Deacons (8-12, 1-7), who have lost six in a row. Brandon Childress scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half.

NO. 14 TEXAS TECH 75, OKLAHOMA STATE 70 >> Keenan Evans scored 26 points to help the Red Raider rally from a 15-point deficit and beat the Cowboys in Lubbock, Texas.

Jarrett Culver finished with 25 points for Texas Tech (16-4, 5-3 Big 12), which had lost two in a row.

Jeffrey Carroll had 16 points for Oklahoma State (13-7, 3-5).

NO. 22 TENNESSEE 67, VANDERBILT 62 >> Jordan Bowden scored 19 points to help the Volunteers defeat the Commodores in Knoxville, Tennessee, for their fifth win in six games.

Tennessee (14-5, 5-3 SEC) withstood a brilliant performanc­e from Vanderbilt’s Riley LaChance, who scored each of his 25 points in the second half.

Jeff Roberson added 21 points for the Commodores (7-13, 2-6).
