Turnovers, shooting woes doom Cal

Cal struggled with turnovers and long scoring droughts as Utah handed the Bears a 77-43 defeat in Salt Lake City, their sixth consecutiv­e road loss.

Darius McNeill scored 10 points to lead Cal (8-18, 2-11 Pac-12). Cal struggled to adjust to Utah’s defensive pressure in the first half and quickly coughed up several turnovers. The Bears had six turnovers in the first 8 minutes and racked up 11 turnovers by halftime. Utah scored 17 points off those turnovers and opened the door for the Utes to gradually pull away as the first half progressed.

Cal endured a five-minute stretch in the first half and a six-minute stretch in the second half where it scored a single basket.

David Collette scored 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting in a dominant performanc­e around the paint. Justin Bibbins chipped in 15, and Sedrick Barefield added 13 for the Utes. Utah (15-9, 7-6) won its fourth straight at home against Pac-12 opponents.

SANTA CLARA 70, SAN DIEGO 64 >>

KJ Feagin had a career-high 32 points on 14-of-21 shooting, and the host Broncos rallied from 11 down to beat the Toreros. Feagin scored the goahead points on a layup to make it 64-62 with 1:03 left. The Broncos (9-17, 6-8 WCC) made all six of their free throws in the final 25 seconds to secure the win. The Toreros (16-10, 7-7) had the largest lead of the game at 38-27 on the first basket of the second half. Santa Clara outscored San Diego 17-2 over the next eight minutes .

COLORADO STATE 90, SAN JOSE STATE 79 >>

Keith Fisher III had 23 points and nine rebounds, and Ryan Welage and Noah Baumann added 16 points each for the Spartans, but they lost in Fort Collins to the Rams, a team in turmoil. Colorado State (11-16, 4-10 Mountain West) suspended interim head coach Steve Barnes just hours before the game and assistant coach Jase Herl took his place, helping the team snap a seven-game losing streak while extending San Jose State’s (3-20, 0-12) skid to 12 games. Barnes took over on Feb. 3 when head coach Larry Eustachy was placed on administra­tive leave and is under investigat­ion for mistreatin­g his players.

NEVADA 83, SAN DIEGO STATE 58 >>

Jordan Caroline scored 26 points, and Lindsay Drew just missed a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists to lead the No. 23 Wolf Pack (21-5, 10-2 Mountain West). Matt Mitchell led San Diego State (13-10, 5-7) with 12 points.

VIRGINIA TECH 61, VIRGINIA 60>>

Kerry Blackshear Jr. scored on a putback with 5.8 seconds left, and the visiting Hokies (18-7, 7-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) spoiled the No. 2 Cavaliers’ opportunit­y to climb to No. 1. Devon Hall had 16 points for Virginia (23-2, 12-1), but the 93.3 percent free throw shooter missed twice from the line in the final 31 seconds.

MICHIGAN STATE 68, NO. 3 PURDUE 65 >>

Miles Bridges made a tiebreakin­g 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left and finished with 20 points, helping the No. 4 Spartans top No. 3 Boilermake­rs in East Lansing. The Spartans (24-3, 12-2 Big Ten) have won eight straight. The Boilermake­rs (23-4, 12-2) have lost two straight after winning a school-record 19 games in a row.

XAVIER 72, CREIGHTON 71 >>

Quentin Goodin made two free throws with threetenth­s of a second left, allowing Big East-leading and No. 5 Musketeers (232, 11-2) to hold off the Bluejays (18-7, 8-5).

TEXAS TECH 66, KANSAS STATE 47 >>

Keenan Evans scored 19 points, and the No. 7 Red Raiders (21-4, 8-4 Big 12) won on the road to take sole possession of the Big 12 lead. In the second half, Kansas State (178, 6-6) had more turnovers (11) than made baskets (5) and ended up shooting just 29 percent on the night.

BAYLOR 80, KANSAS 64 >>

Manu Lecomte scored eight straight points for the host Bears (15-10, 5-7 Big 12) after the No. 10 Jayhawks had pulled within a basket, and the senior guard finished with 18 in the upset. Kansas (19-6, 8-4 Big 12) trailed 30-20 at halftime after having more turnovers (nine) than made field goals (seven) before the break.

ALABAMA 78, TENNESSEE 50 >>

Donta Hall had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Collin Sexton scored 16 points as the Crimson Tide (16-10, 7-5 SEC) dominated the No. 15 Volunteers (18-6, 8-4).

IOWA STATE 88, OKLAHOMA 80>>

Freshman Lindell Wigginton scored 26 points to lead the Cyclones’ upset, as they handed the No. 17 Sooners their sixth consecutiv­e road loss. Fellow freshman Cam Lard had 19 points with 17 rebounds for the Cyclones (13-11, 4-8 Big 12).

ARIZONA STATE 88, UCLA 79 >>

Shannon Evans II scored 23 points, and Tra Holder added 22 as the Sun Devils completed their first Pac12 weekend sweep in three seasons under coach Bobby Hurley. Arizona State (196, 7-6 Pac-12) knocked off USC to start the week and revved up its big-run game against the Bruins (17-8, 8-5), using an 18-4 firsthalf spurt to build an eightpoint halftime lead.

BYU 75, USF 73 >>

Souley Boum scored the Dons’ final 13 points of regulation, including two free throws with 39.3 seconds left for a six-point lead, but the host Cougars roared back, forced overtime and won. Boum scored 21 points for USF (14-13, 6-8 WCC). TJ Haws led BYU (20-7, 9-5) with 26 points.

UTAH STATE 71, BOISE STATE 65>>

Koby McEwen scored 23 points to lead the Aggies (14-12, 7-6 MW). Boise State (20-5, 10-3) had a fivegame win streak snapped and is now a half-game back of conference leader Nevada.

Women SAINT MARY’S 72, GONZAGA 56>>

The Gaels held the Bulldogs (20-5, 13-1 WCC) to 29.5 percent shooting on their home floor and handed the conference leaders their first loss. Sydney Raggio scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Saint Mary’s (169, 9-5).

COLORADO STATE 73, SAN JOSE STATE 66 >>

The Spartans (6-17, 3-9 MW) cut a 20-point second-half deficit to five late in the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t get over the hump and lost to the Rams (18-7, 10-4 MW). Myzhanique Ladd and Taylor Turney each scored 15 points to lead San Jose State.

SAN DIEGO 51, SANTA CLARA 40 >>

Charise Holloway tied a career-high with 19 points, but the Broncos (718, 3-11 WCC), who cut the lead to one in the second half after trailing by as many as 15 in the first half, fell to the host Toreros (1411, 7-7).

UCONN 124, WICHITA STATE 43 >>

Napheesa Collier scored 26 points, and Katie Lou Samuelson added 22 as the Huskies (24-0, 12-0 American) scored the program’s second-most lopsided win. The 124 points was two shy of the program record, which was set against Providence in 1998. UConn won its 75th straight home game.
