Five more Lunar New Year celebrations
There are many more ways to celebrate the Lunar New Year than the big Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Here are five more options around the bay.
1 Oakland Museum of California Lunar New Year Celebration:
This culturally rich celebration at OMCA includes live performances and an array of Asian traditions in arts, crafts, food and more. Explore connections between the diverse Asian cultures represented in California, including Chinese, Tibetan, Korean, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Japanese and others. 2 Tet Festival:
With its rich Vietnamese heritage, San Jose celebrates this holiday with a three-day Tet Festival that includes a lion dance, magic and fashion shows, food and vendors at Eastridge Mall. 3 to 11 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Feb. 18. 3 San Francisco Symphony Chinese New Year Concert:
Celebrate Lunar New Year and the Year of the Dog with the San Francisco Symphony at this family event ($34-$79) that draws on both ancient and contemporary traditions. The concert begins at 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at Davies Symphony Hall, but there’s an activityfilled, pre-concert reception with Chinese instruments, lion dancing, “lucky” red envelopes, tea bars, and sweet and savory bites, that begins at 2 p.m. Continue the festivities after the show by attending the dramatic Imperial Dinner ($400 and up) in Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall. 4 Chinese New Year Festival:
Join the San Francisco Chinatown community street fair festivities, which include more than 120 booths and concessions, Chinese folk dancing, opera, drumming and more. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 24, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 25 on Grant Avenue from California to Broadway streets. 5 Dumpling Down!:
