Stanford women win sixth in row

Brittany McPhee had 25 points, on 9-of-14 shooting, and 12 rebounds to help No. 17 Stanford beat Colorado 62-53 on Sunday.

Stanford (18-8, 12-2 Pac12) has won six in a row and nine of its last 10.

Kennedy Leonard and Annika Jank made backto-back jumpers to give Colorado (12-13, 3-11) a two-point lead midway through the second quarter, but Stanford used an 18-2 run scoring the final 12 points as the Buffaloes went scoreless for almost four minutes to close the first half with a 35-21 lead. The Cardinal scored 10 of the first 14 third-quarter points, including five by McPhee, to push the margin to 20.

The Buffs used a 10-2 spurt to trim the deficit to 56-44 late in the fourth quarter, and Payton Carter’s layup with eight seconds to play pulled them within single digits for the first time in the second half.

The Cardinal made 19 of their season-high 35 foul shots, and Colorado hit just 7 of 12 free throws. CAL 84, UTAH 73 >> The Bears (17-8, 8-6 Pac-12) bounced back from a three-game losing streak to complete their second weekend sweep of the season and moved into a tie for fifth place.

Juniors Asha Thomas and Kristine Anigwe scored 22 points apiece as the Bears had their highest conference point total in the last four seasons. The Utes (15-10, 6-8 Pac12) suffered back-to-back road losses for the first time this season and saw their four-game winning streak against Cal in conference play end.

Thomas and Anigwe went a combined 16 for 22 (72.7 percent) from the floor and 10 for 10 from the foul line as the Bears improved to 11-3 at home on the season.

UCLA 71, ARIZONA STATE 63 >> Jordin Canada scored 16 points and Lajahna Drummer added 15 to lead the No. 8 Bruins (21-4, 12-2) to a victory over the No. 25 Sun Devils.

OREGON 90, WASHINGTON STATE 79 >> Ruthy Hebard scored 29 points, hitting all 12 of her field goal attempts, as the No. 9 Ducks (23-4, 12-2) beat the Cougars to remain in a tie for first place in the Pac-12. LSU 80, TEXAS A&M 78 >> Chloe Jackson scored 27 points and Raigyne Louis added 26 and the Tigers upended the No. 14 Aggies.

Men

COLORADO 64, STANFORD 56 >> The Cardinal rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to make it interestin­g, but the Buffaloes defeated Stanford for the ninth consecutiv­e time.

Stanford was led by Dorian Pickens’ 18 points. Daejon Davis had 12 points and Reid Travis added 10 for Stanford, which fell to 2-5 in conference play since a 5-1 start.

The Cardinal (13-13, 7-6) shot just 35.7 percent from the floor, a tick below their 35.8 percent shooting in Thursday’s 15-point loss at Utah. Stanford just also was just 7 of 21 on 3-point attempts.

Stanford pulled to within 45-42 on consecutiv­e 3-pointers by Isaac White and Pickens with 9:01 remaining.

Pickens connected on another 3-pointer to get the Cardinal within a point with 6:35 left, but Colorado put the game away with a 12-3 run.

Lucas Siewert punctuated the Colorado run with a pair of 3-pointers as the Buffaloes regained a 10-point edge with 1:07 left to play.

DUKE 80, GEORGIA TECH 69 >> Grayson Allen scored 23 points and the No. 9 Blue Devils ended a two-game losing streak with a win over the Yellow Jackets.

“We couldn’t lose three in a row,” Allen said. “We couldn’t let that happen. We were desperate to get this win.”

Duke played without star freshman center Marvin Bagley, who sat out with a mild right knee sprain.

MICHIGAN 83, WISCONSIN 72 >> Moe Wagner scored 20 points, went 8 of 14 from the field and added 11 rebounds, and the No. 20 Wolverines beat the Badgers.

TEXAS A&M SUSPENSION­S >> The Aggies’ J.J. Caldwell has been dismissed from the team and Jay Jay Chandler has been suspended indefinite­ly after the two were arrested for possession of marijuana.
