Is Caltrans going to do something about the uneven asphalt on northbound Interstate 680 in the two far left lanes south of Bernal Avenue? It is so uneven it appears the asphalt was dumped and not rolled out . ... I hate the drive from Fremont to Tracy on 680, but it would be a little bit better if the freeway wasn’t so crappy to drive on.

Finally, relief is coming up the Sunol Grade. Caltrans is replacing concrete slabs along northbound I-680 between Auto Mall Parkway and the Koopman Road overcrossing in Fremont this week.

Work through Thursday will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Some lanes will be closed.

I commute by bicycle along Tantau Avenue but the other day the road was closed due to an Apple shareholder meeting. The other two main roads I would consider riding on, Lawrence Expressway Way and Wolfe Road, are not very bike friendly.

Will Apple continue to close Tantau once the campus is finished and everyone has moved in? If so, is there any way to keep a route open for cyclists when events occur?

— Molly Cox, Sunnyvale

A

At this time the city doesn’t know how frequently the Tantau closures will occur but bike and pedestrian access will be available, so there is no need to take Lawrence or Wolfe.

In addition, Cupertino will be installing a short bike lane at the northbound approach at Tantau and Stevens Creek Boulevard to make it clear that there is only a single through vehicle lane.

That lane will be painted green within the next few weeks.

There is a pothole the size of a Jacuzzi where Gish Road meets the ramps to northbound Interstate 880 in San Jose. Been there for months.

Cars and trucks take quite the beating. The whole intersection of 880 and Old Bayshore Highway, north 10th Street and Gish is a disaster. The road is torn up by all the garbage, recycling, auto transport and other industrial users in the area.

Who is responsible for the maintenance and improvements? And, when is there going to be a redo?

— Andrew Dyer

A

This is San Jose’s Jacuzzi. City crews will be making interim repairs soon.

As for Old Bayshore Highway, pavement maintenance scheduled for 2017 between Zanker Road and Old Oakland Road got delayed by the weather at the end of the year. It will be rescheduled for this spring.
