Two killed in shooting outside market
Man and woman fatally shot, one person injured in Sunday night attack in Broadmoor police jurisdiction
DALY CITY >> A man and woman were shot and killed outside a market in an unincorporated pocket of Daly City in a Sunday night attack that also left one other person injured, authorities said.
On Monday, the victims were identified by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office as Michael Garcia-Salem, 22, of Half Moon Bay, and Vanessa Guillory, 21, of San Francisco.
The shooting was reported just before 9 p.m. in the 500 block of Villa Street, near Hillside Boulevard east of Interstate 280. Monday morning, a small vigil of candles and flowers was forming outside Hillside Market.
Initial confusion arose about where the attack occurred, because the case is being investigated by the Broadmoor Police Department, even though the unincorporated enclave of Broadmoor sits about a mile west across I-280.
But due to a little-known jurisdictional oddity, the shooting site falls within another enclave that while disconnected from the rest of the town by a freeway, is protected by Broadmoor police. This was reaffirmed Monday both by the department and San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, whose office is assisting in the investigation along with the Sheriff’s Office.
After the shooting, Guillory was pronounced dead at the scene, and two others were taken to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries. Garcia-Salem died at the hospital, according to the coroner’s office.
