Gilroy dominates CCS
Mustangs roll into state meet after winning 10 of 14 weight divisions at section finals
Gilroy will be taking a recordbreaking team to the state wrestling championships this weekend in Bakersfield.
The Mustangs have been the Central Coast Section’s top program for many years but last weekend took their dominance to a completely different level.
They won 10 of the 14 weight classifications in the finals at Independence High on Saturday night, cruising to their 16th consecutive team championship with an astounding 373.5 points. The previous record was 297.
Jayden Gomez (106 pounds), Nic Aguilar (120), Chase Saldate (126), Alex Felix (132), Daniel Vizcarra (138), Nathan Villarreal (145), Johnny Fox (152), Joseph Barnes (160) Tony Andrade (195) and Nick Villareal (285) all won individual section crowns for Gilroy.
“Gilroy is a powerhouse,” Bellarmine junior Victor Jaquez told the Bay Area News Group’s Vytas Mazeika. “They’re going to be a powerhouse for a long time, and all we can do is try and knock them off. But they’re amazing.”
Jaquez won the CCS title at 220 pounds and is among three from this publication’s coverage area ranked No. 1 in the state by the California Wrestler heading into this weekend.
The others are Aguilar and De La Salle’s Peyton Omania at 145 pounds.
Andrade is ranked No. 2 in the state at 195.
