-

Aug. 2, 1935 - Mar. 7, 2018 Saratoga, CA

Joyce was a long-time resident of Saratoga who died peacefully at home on March 7, 2018 after a long illness. Her spirit, warmth and wit will be missed.

She was born Joyce Salter in San Diego on August 2, 1935 to Fred Salter and Nora (Bradley) Salter Smith. As a military daughter, she lived in a number of cities in California and other states before returning to San Diego where she graduated from San Diego High School in 1953. She then attended U.C Berkeley on a full scholarship where she earned a B.A. in Spanish in 1957 and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

After marrying, she raised a family in the Bay Area. She lived in Saratoga for the last 48 years where she had a close group of friends, nearby family, and many cats who were as naturally drawn to her as she was to them.

Joyce was passionate about languages and she taught Spanish for many years up until very recently. Her interests included reading, classical music, gardening, baking, making jam, and walking the trails and lanes near her home.

Joyce is survived by her four sons (Nicholas Kayhan of Oakland, Alexander Kayhan of Tracy, Dariush Kayhan of San Francisco and Kevin Kayhan of Saratoga) and twelve grandchildren (Curtis, Nathan, Cyrus, Julia, Christian, Zarah, Kyle, Zaila, Aaron, Anderson, Emma and Benjamin).

At Joyce’s request, there will be a private family memorial service.
