Wish You Were Here
ARIZONA: Calvin and Gerrye Wong fulfilled her birthday bucket list by visiting the colorful Antelope Slot Canyon in Arizona with family. “The tour was led by Navajo Indian guide Melvin, who played his mystical flute ballad to wish them good travels after leaving the canyon,” Gerrye says. “Antelope Slot Canyon was only discovered by the general public after 1996 when a photographer brought out photos of the beautiful colors of the canyon. The Navajo guide said only he and his playmates of the tribe knew and enjoyed running in and out of the area before admiring hordes of people have now descended into the area.”
TRAVEL TIPS: “Make reservations before coming as one can only visit the site on tours led by the Navajo Indian companies. There is a lower and upper canyon tour, the upper being on level ground and less crowded so better for photos at leisure. The lower canyon tour has steep ladder stairs and is very crowded, making it harder to stop and enjoy the views. A boat ride into the canyon on Lake Powell is an enjoyable side trip, so advise staying overnight in Page, Arizona, to truly enjoy the beauty of the area. All ages would marvel at the Slot Canyon colored walls as the sun filters in to make outstanding camera views. Best time to visit is morning hours and our visit in October was perfect weather. Antelope Slot Canyon was the perfect site for a beautiful and peaceful Wong Family reunion for Grandma Gerrye and Grandpa Calvin to enjoy with grandchildren who have flown the coop after college.”
