Raiders sign veteran QB Johnson to join potential backup mix

The Raiders signed quarterback Josh Johnson on Monday, presumably to challenge Connor Cook for the backup job.

Johnson hasn’t thrown a pass in a regular season game since 2011, so fans will have to wait and see what his signing means for unrestricted free agent EJ Manuel, who played fiveplus quarters last season when Derek Carr injured his back.

Maybe Carr’s No. 2 will neither be Manuel nor someone who’s already on the roster.

Johnson was Marshawn Lynch’s quarterback at Oakland Tech High School. They’re also cousins. The two, along with Los Angeles Rams cornerback Marcus Peters, mentor at-risk youths across diverse populations through the Fam1st Family Foundation.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Johnson in 2008, when Jon Gruden was their head coach, in the fifth round at No. 160 overall. He’s played for 10 different teams in the 10 years since, including the Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants and Houston Texans.

The move makes the Raiders his 11th team in the past decade.

Johnson has played 29 games in his career, including five starts. He has thrown for 1,042 yards on 96-for-177 passing with five touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has also run 44 times for 274 yards during his career.
