-

October 8, 1918 - March 19, 2018 Resident of Millbrae

George P. Galloway passed away peacefully in his Millbrae home on March 19th, at the age of 99. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Helen D. Galloway, who died on February 17, 2018. The day after her funeral service, George suffered a stroke and died a few days later. Some say he died of a “broken heart”.

George was born and raised on a farm in Mayfield, Kentucky, the son of Robert and Maude Galloway. He was the youngest and last survivor of five brothers and one sister. Graduating as high school valedictorian, he received a scholarship to attend college in Missouri. Subsequently, he moved to Washington, D.C., continuing his education at Southeastern University. He joined the FBI in 1941, training to become a Special Agent. During that time he was fortunate to meet Helen Deegan of Superior, Wisconsin. They married in 1944 in Washington, D.C.

As a Special Agent, George was assigned to FBI offices in Los Angeles, Portland, Oregon and ultimately, San Francisco. Son Patrick was born in Portland. Daughter Candace and son Michael were born in San Francisco. The family ultimately settled in Millbrae, where George and Helen raised their children and became active members of St Dunstan parish. They also volunteered in various civic and community activities. In retirement, George and Helen continued their long association with the FBI community, and George served as a past chairman of the Peninsula Chapter of the Society of Former FBI Agents.

After his retirement from the FBI in1970, George accepted a position as Vice President in charge of security for the 12th District of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, covering the nine Western States. During that time, he spent a number of years as Chairman of the Protection Committee, covering all District Banks in the Federal Reserve system.

George Galloway was the last of a band of brothers from a rural Kentucky farm. Despite his successful careers, he never forgot his humble roots. He loved sharing his childhood memories, as well as the produce from his vegetable garden, with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most importantly, George was a devoted husband and a beloved patriarch to three generations of Galloways. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, the twinkle in his eye, and the song in his heart.

George is survived by his three children; G. Patrick (Kathy), Candace (Alan) and Michael (Leslie). He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. The family will hold private burial services, with a funeral Mass at a later date. The children would particularly like to thank all of our parents’ caregivers, who have lovingly assisted them on their final journey.
