Taillon tosses one-hitter to lift Pirates over Reds

-

Pittsburgh’s Jameson Taillon dominated the struggling Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, allowing just one hit while picking up the first shutout of his career as the surprising Pirates rolled to a 5-0 victory.

Taillon (2-0) struck out seven and walked two. The lone hit he surrendered came on Tyler Mahle’s single to center with one out in the third. Taillon even added an RBI single off Mahle (1-1) in the second.

A night after missing a start due to concerns over a bruised right foot, Gregory Polanco turned on a Mahle pitch and sent it into the right-field seats for a two-run homer in the fifth.

Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez broke his right thumb after getting hit by a Taillon pitch in the fourth inning. DIAMONDBACKS FIGHT FOR WIN >> David Peralta hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Dominic Leone in the eighth, A.J. Pollock went deep later in the inning and Arizona beat St. Louis in a game marred by a benchesclearing incident in the second inning.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo was ejected by plate umpire Tim Timmons in the second inning. Lovullo was arguing a called third strike on Pollock and got into a shouting match with St. Louis catcher Yadi Molina during the argument with Timmons. Molina appeared to lunge at Luvollo and made contact as players ran onto the field.

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny stepped between Molina and Lovullo.
