This sprawling golf resort 30 minutes from downtown Bend is tailor-made for extended families. Golf-avoiders need not despair, either. While avid duffers will be drawn by the Jack Nicklaus Signature and Tom Fazio Championship golf courses, the grounds also include a spa, playground, hiking and biking trails, swimming pools and hot tubs, including adults-only varieties. And fat-tire bikes are parked enticingly near the entrance to the big, lodge-style clubhouse. Zzz’s: Big fluffy duvets and crisp white sheets top the king-size beds of the junior suites. The larger suites offer extra rooms that can be used as a bedroom or even a study, if you’re planning to stay awhile. Rooms are decorated in caramel and russet tones with leather furniture and wood accents, gas fireplaces that flare to life at the flip of a switch and paintings that depict Central Oregon landscapes. We kept saying, “Hey, we were just there!” Splashes: Our enormous bathroom included a deep soaking tub and tiled, stand-alone shower, fluffy towels and double sinks. Extras: We’ve stayed in a lot of accommodations that included kitchen facilities, and we’ve never seen one this splendidly outfitted, from the Viking fridge to the cabinets that hold everything from Champagne flutes to sippy cups. There’s even a copy of Kathy Casey’s “Northwest Table” cookbook.
Don’t want to cook? Pronghorn’s three restaurants include the Trailhead Grill and swanky Chanterelle, which reopens for the season in May, and the year-round Cascada, where we happened upon Burger Thursday, with very tasty cheeseburgers paired with Deschutes Mirror Pond pale ale ($14).
