Stanford women claim golf regional
Stanford won the NCAA women’s golf San Francisco regional championship on Wednesday, posting a thirdround best 6-under 282 at TPC Harding Park. It was Stanford’s third straight NCAA regional victory and first win on the season.
Stanford, tied for fourth and seven shots off the lead through 18 holes, chopped away at top-ranked UCLA’s lead over the next two rounds to win the event by four strokes over the Bruins.
The Cardinal (287-287282) was 8-under for the three-day, 54-hole tournament and one of six teams to earn a trip to the NCAA championships being held May 18-23 at Stillwater, Oklahoma. UCLA, Ole Miss, Louisville, Kent State and Colorado also secured bids.
Cal’s Marthe Wold (7170-69-210, -6) advanced as an individual to the NCAA championships.
Water polo
STANFORD, CAL IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS >> Cal and Stanford will go for the women’s water polo national championship this week at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center on the USC campus in Los Angeles. No. 3 Cal (19-5) opens play Friday in the quarterfinals against Michigan (328) at 5:15 p.m.
No. 2 Stanford (18-3) goes in search of its seventh NCAA crown. The Cardinal begins with No. 8 UC Irvine (15-13) at 3:30 p.m. on Friday with the winner advancing to play either No. 3 Cal or No. 9 Michigan in the semifinals on Saturday.
Stanford, the defending national champion, has won six NCAA titles (2002, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017) and five of the past seven. The Bears are making their second consecutive NCAA championships appearance.
Basketball
WCC REPRESENTED ON MEN’S BASKETBALL COMMITTEE >> West Coast Conference commissioner Gloria Nevarez was appointed to the 12-member NCAA Division I men’s basketball oversight committee. Nevarez will begin her two-year term in July.
BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe served on the men’s basketball selection committee, wrapping up his tenure in 2017.
