Tigers slugger Cabrera to miss rest of season

- By The Associated Press

Miguel Cabrera’s season is over, leaving Detroit without its biggest star during a season when there wasn’t much else for Tigers fans to latch onto.

Cabrera ruptured his left biceps tendon on a swing Tuesday night, ending the twotime MVP’s year just a couple of weeks after he returned from a DL stint due to a right hamstring strain.

“This is obviously a very sad day for Miggy and for the entire ballclub,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “It is obviously a huge blow to the team, both on and off the field, but we will have to find a way to overcome it.”The 35-year-old Cabrera batted .301 with an .848 OPS, three homers and 22 RBIs for a team that wasn’t expected to compete in the AL Central.

COLON NOTCHES MILESTONE >> Bartolo Colon recorded his 2,500th career strikeout, retiring Dodgers second baseman Max Muncy in the first inning. That made the 45-year-old Colon the 34th pitcher in history to reach the 2,500th plateau, according to Elias Sports Bureau. IT TAKES TWO >> Nationals star Bryce Harper left Tuesday’s game against the Yankees after he was hit by a pitch for the second time. Harper was hit on the right elbow by a 90mph pitch from CC Sabathia in the fifth inning and fell to the ground. He was struck on his left foot by an 89-mph slider from Dellin Betances in the eighth.

CASHNER LANDS ON DL >> Orioles right-hander Andrew Cashner was placed on the 10-day disabled list with lower back spasms and is expected to miss at least one start.

NO TARGET DATE FOR ARCHER >> Rays right-hander Chris Archer has no timetable for throwing off a mound again and could be sidelined through the All-Star break. Archer has been on the 10-day disabled list since June 3 with a left abdominal strain.
