How will Roseanne’s absence be explained?

- By Chuck Barney cbarney@ bayareanewsgroup.com

By now, you’ve probably heard that ABC plans to do a “Roseanne” spinoff next fall that features no Roseanne. It’s a pretty lame idea, but if it keeps most of those actors off the streets, who are we to protest?

Roseanne Barr and her original series were dumped by the network after she cluelessly sent out a racist tweet and later blamed it on her Ambien intake. That, folks, is how you set fire to a career.

ABC emphasized that Barr will have no financial or creative involvement in the new series. Executive producer Tom Werner and Barr reached an agreement that will allow his company, Werner Entertainment, to produce the series without her participation.

“I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne. I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved,” Barr said in a statement.

Werner added: “We are grateful to have reached this agreement to keep our team working as we continue to explore stories of the Conner family.”

A breakdown of the spinoff provided by the network says that “After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before.” The family will navigate parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America.

The new show, “The Conners,” will include Dan (John Goodman), Darlene (Sara Gilbert), Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) and everyone else, except the family matriarch. All of which raises the obvious question: How will the spinoff writers explain Roseanne’s absence? Will her character be killed? Will she and Dan get a divorce?

We have a few ideas that we’ve put into a poll, and now we’re asking you to weigh in and tell us which one you like best.
