Milpitas police arrested five people last week after an officer discovered a stolen sport-utility vehicle at a motel, police said Saturday.

An officer spotted a black 2017 Ford Explorer SUV without license plates in the parking lot of the Americas Best Value Inn Milpitas/Silicon Valley at 485 South Main Street around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a police statement.

The officer spoke to 31-year-old Jorge Tellez, of Pittsburg; 28-year-old Luis Montalvankuan, of Oakley; and 22-year-old Joselin Gutierrez, of Pleasant Hill as they got into the SUV.

Police said a check of the SUV’s vehicle identification number showed it had been reported as stolen from Concord on May 13. The three suspects were arrested, and officers searched the SUV and found burglary tools, drug paraphernalia and a crowbar, according to the statement.

Officers then checked the hotel room the suspects had booked, and spoke to 26-year-old Samantha Hurley and 30-year-old Rick Antonio, both of Concord.

Hurley had an active arrest warrant for automobile theft from the Concord Police Department, and Antonio had a probation-violation warrant from the Pleasant Hill Police Department, police said.

Tellez was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for automobile theft and possession of burglary tools, while Montalvankuan was booked into the jail for automobile theft, possession of burglary tools and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Gutierrez was booked into the jail for possession of an illegal weapon, and Hurley and Antonio were booked into the jail for their warrants, police said.
