Soccer player comes out as openly gay

Minnesota United midfielder Collin Martin announced he is gay, making him the only active male athlete in the major profession­al sports leagues to come out. Martin made the announceme­nt on social media Friday before the Loons lost 1-0 at home to FC Dallas on Pride Night. He said he’s been out for years with family, friends and teammates and “received only kindness and acceptance from everyone in Major League Soccer.”

Martin has played six seasons, including four with DC United. He encourages “others who play sports profession­ally or otherwise to have the confidence that sport will welcome them wholeheart­edly.”

Reirden was the only candidate for the job after Trotz resigned June 18 and joined the New York Islanders three days later. DOUGHTY STICKS WITH KINGS >> Defenseman Drew Doughty has agreed to an eight-year contract extension through the 2026-27 season to stay with the Los Angeles Kings.

TEXAS TRAINER CHARGED >> A former trainer who worked alongside imprisoned ex-sports doctor Larry Nassar at the famed Karolyi gymnastics ranch in Texas was charged Friday with sexual assault. But prosecutor­s said there wasn’t evidence of criminal wrongdoing by the couple who ran the facility, former national team coordinato­rs Bela and Martha Karolyi. A grand jury indicted former trainer Debra Van Horn on one count of second-degree sexual assault of a child, making her the first person other than Nassar to be charged in direct connection with his assaults.

TIGER MAKES A CHARGE >> Beau Hossler has been hanging around the lead on the weekend in search of his first PGA Tour victory, and he gets another chance at the Quicken Loans National. So does Tiger Woods. Hossler, the 23-year-old in his first full year on the tour, birdied four of his last five holes and finished with a 35-foot birdie putt on No. 18 for a 4-under 66, giving him a share of the lead with Ryan Armour and Brian Gay at TPC Potomac (Maryland) at Avenel. Woods shot a 65 that left him four shots behind heading into the weekend. KELLY UP BY ONE AT U.S. SENIOR OPEN >> Jerry Kelly reached 5 under to take a one-shot lead over Miguel Angel Jimenez into the weekend at the U.S. Senior Open. Kelly chipped in for birdie on No. 18 to highlight his round of 1-under 69 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jimenez shot a bogey-free round of 68 at Broadmoor CC.

KO CLIMBS INTO CONTENTION >> Lydia Ko surged into contention at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championsh­ip, shooting a 6-under 66 to move two strokes off the lead. First-round leader Sung Hyun Park (72), Brooke Henderson (71) and So Yeon Ryu (69) were tied for the lead at 6-under 138 at Kemper Lakes in Kildeer, Illinois.

COLTS’ TURBIN SUSPENDED >> Colts running back Robert Turbin has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL policy on performanc­e-enhancers. Turbin tweeted that a urine sample he provided to the league resulted in a positive test.
