Bay Area fans are getting “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” before the rest of the West Coast.

The Tony- and Olivier Award-winning play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Parts One and Two)” will make it's West Coast debut at The Curran in San Francisco in the fall of 2019.

The San Francisco run will be the fourth engagement of the play overall — and the second in the United States. The play, a commercial and critical hit, is currently running in London and New York, and an engagement is set to begin in Melbourne, Australia, in early 2019.

“The beautiful and historic Curran in San Francisco is the perfect theater for the next North American company of ‘Cursed Child,'” producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said in a statement. “We are delighted that ATG (Ambassador Theatre Group) and Carole Shorenstein Hays have worked their magic to provide the ideal West Coast home for the production.”

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is the eighth story in J.K. Rowlings' vastly popular series and the first official Potter story to be presented on stage. Bay Area theatergoers will be able to choose between seeing both parts on the same day (matinee and evening), or on separate days. The play picks up not quite two decades after the close of the final novel and centers on the adventures of Potter's son, Albus, at the Hogwarts school.

The play, which the New York Times said is the most expensive nonmusical production in Broadway history, partly because of its special effects, recently won six Tony Awards, including best play.

Shorenstein Hays sounds thrilled to welcome the play to San Francisco.

“The Bay Area is where cutting-edge culture meets cutting-edge technology, so this wonderful example of riveting storytelling and first-of-its-kind stage magic has found its ideal home in our great city,” she said in a news release.

Now comes the tricky part: Getting tickets. This is surely going to be one of the hottest tickets for 2019. So, you'll likely want to get an early jump if you want to score tickets.

Ticketing details, as well as performance dates, casting and other information, will be announced in the months to come. So, the best bet to stay in the know is to visitHarryPotterThePlay.com/San-Francisco and sign up for the mailing list.
