Ruthann Carpenter Lockman, 77, passed away on June 10, 2018 at Kaiser Roseville Hospital with her loving husband Bill by her side. She survived over 65 years as a type 1 diabetic due to her diligent control of this disease.

Ruth was born on Sept. 6, 1940 in Minneapolis, MN to the late Walter and Dorothy (Hernlund) Carpenter. The family later moved to Glen Lake, MN near Hopkins. She attended Hopkins High School and the University of Minnesota where she received a BS degree in Medical Technology. At the U of M, she met her future husband Bill Lockman of 55 Glorious years. They married on Mar. 23, 1963 while Bill completed his MS degree in Aeronautical Engineering. They moved to the San Francisco Bay area in Dec. 1963 where Bill worked at NASA Ames Research Center for 30 years. Ruth worked in medical research at Stanford University until their first son was born. She was very active at our elementary school, Murdock, where she became the volunteer librarian. They named the library in her honor. Being an avid reader herself, interacting with the kids was a joy for Ruth. She later did lab work at Sunnyvale Medical Clinic. She was also asked to teach Medical Assistants at De Anza and West Valley Community Colleges in Cupertino and Saratoga, respectively.

In 1998, after Ruth’s retirement, Ruth and Bill moved to Del Webb’s Sun City Roseville in Roseville, CA near Sacramento.

Ruth was an enthusiastic singer and sang in the Sun City Singers, the church choir, and a 12-member ensemble at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Granite Bay, CA. She was also a volunteer for just short of 20 years visiting with patients at Kaiser Roseville Hospital. She loved these activities! She will always be remembered for her positive and cheerful attitude; always thinking of others and serving others with a happy heart.

Ruth and her family spent most of their vacations camping with a tent, tent trailer, and fifth-wheel trailer. Her favorite location was Fallen Leaf Lake near Lake Tahoe, CA. While living in Sun City, Ruth and Bill were fortunate to do much traveling with Elderhostel and Road Scholar to: Norway, Denmark, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Alaska, 5 of the Hawaiian, Islands, Utah, Washington, DC, and Canada. The Canadian trip was a train excursion from Toronto to Vancouver

Ruth had two late brothers, Walter and Leslie. Her sister Patricia Carpenter and her partner Debbie Strong survive her. Her husband Bill and their two sons also survive her: Steve and his wife Sonja with their children Brynja and Grant and Eric and his wife Shannon with their children Matthew and Abby. Ruth’s grandchildren were such a treasured part of her life and she loved the times she could spend with them.

A special thanks is expressed to the staff and volunteers at Kaiser Roseville Hospital and Eskaton Fair Oaks for all their kindness and care.

A memorial service for Ruth will be held at 2:00 pm on Sat., Aug. 11, 2018 at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Granite Bay, CA.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the American Diabetes Association in memory of Ruth at http://www.diabetes.org.
