Attention yellers: Right red arrow means no turn on red

Q The eastbound Alum Rock Avenue exit off Interstate 680 has a right red arrow. I was just honked at and yelled at because

I refused to turn right on the red arrow. The yellers kept on me, saying there was no “no turn on red” sign even though there is one in a pretty horrible location not in direct line with the right arrow. Can you remind people what a right red arrow actually means? Would these same people turn on a red left arrow just because there was no sign to do otherwise? — Lito Valderrama, San Jose A It can’t be that bad, can it?

Either someone has taken the sign away or it has been turned around and now many people ignore the red turn arrow while some wait for the green light. The other day, a guy got out of his car and was yelling at another guy. Can they put the sign back up? And hand out a few tickets until hotheads learn the rules? — Pat Accorinti, San Jose A OK, it’s bad when someone gets out of the car in a rage. The sign was hit recently and needs replacing. But a red arrow means no turning right on red. It went up a few years ago to prevent cars jamming up this busy intersection. So to the yellers: Stay in your vehicles until you get a green light.

What are the traffic fixtures being installed at the intersection of Lean and Calero near Highway 85? They look like a kind of protected intersection thing, but if so, they seem to be a bicycle accident waiting to happen. A The curbs are being extended to give pedestrians a shorter distance to cross, and to slow traffic, especially right-turning traffic.

I was beyond elated that Caribbean was being repaved, but my bubble burst when going through the intersection and — boom! — I hit the same old bump. They didn’t scrape flat the excess asphalt that created the bump before repaving, so will we have to continue to deal with this forever? We need a superhero, Gary.
