New Laker LeBron won’t rule out ending career with Cavs

- News service Reports

LeBron James won’t rule out a second homecoming in Cleveland.

The NBA superstar, who earlier this month ended his second stint with the Cavaliers by signing a four-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, told The Associated Press on Monday there could be a day when he plays in his home state again.

Asked if he could end his career in Cleveland, James says he doesn’t “close the chapter on anything or close the book on anything.”

When James announced he was leaving the Cavs, Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert said the team would retire “the famous (hash)23 Cavs jersey one day down the line.”

James says he didn’t know about Gilbert’s comment. But he says it’s awesome.

HAWKS WAIVE ANTHONY >>

The Atlanta Hawks have waived Carmelo Anthony, making official the move that was expected when the 10-time All-Star was traded from Oklahoma City this month. The 34-yearold Anthony may now sign with another team as a free agent. He averaged 16.2 points with Oklahoma City this season. The Hawks acquired Anthony and a protected 2022 first-round draft pick from Oklahoma City and Justin Anderson from the Philadelphia 76ers in the three-team trade July 19.

NEBRASKA’S FROST BURGLARIZED >> New Nebraska football coach Scott Frost had an estimated $172,000 in memorabilia taken from his home over the weekend, Lincoln police said.

Burglars entered Frost’s southwest Lincoln home through the unlocked garage between Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, Capt. Danny Reitan said. He said Frost and his family don’t live in the home yet because it is under renovation and didn’t know whether Frost was in Lincoln over the weekend.

Missing are two Nebraska championship rings, 10 Oregon championship rings, two Central Florida championship rings, five pairs of Air Jordan shoes, football helmets and a gaming console. Also, a gun safe electronic keypad was ripped off.

No arrests have been made and there were no

suspects, Reitan said. IOWA LINEMAN ARRESTED >> Iowa offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs was arrested Sunday and charged with driving while intoxicated. Iowa City police records show that Wirfs, a tackle entering his sophomore season, was taken into custody just before 2 a.m. He was driving a scooter and police say he failed a field sobriety test with a 0.129 blood-alcohol level. In Iowa, the legal limit is 0.08 but for those under 21 the limit is 0.02. Wirfs is 19.

CAPS INVEST IN WILSON >> Tom Wilson does not want to boast he is now a big part of the Washington Capitals’ core. His new contract does that for him.

When the Capitals signed the physical, top-line right winger to a $31 million, six-year contract, it was their biggest statement yet about how they see Wilson. The long-term commitment to the 24-year-old is a big-money investment in a homegrown player who played a significant role in Washington winning the Stanley Cup and could be a future captain once Alex Ovechkin is gone.

“I’ve taken more on my plate every year, and with this deal that’s going to continue to be expected,” Wilson said Monday. “The development, they’ve watched me grow as a player and my role on the team. I think

from their side, they’re confident that I’m going to continue to grow as a player.” PREDATORS SIGN SALOMAKI >> The Nashville Predators have signed restricted free agent Miikka Salomaki to a two-year deal worth $750,000 in each of the next two seasons.

Salomaki, 25, played 58 games last season for the Predators with two goals and six assists. He ranked fourth with 114 hits last season and blocked a careerhigh 35 shots. The 5-foot11, 203-pound Salomaki also has the fourth-most hits for the Predators since 2015-16 with 299.

Originally the 52nd selection overall in the 2011 entry draft, the native of Raahe, Finland, has played 125 games since making his NHL debut Jan. 8, 2015. RONALDO SKIPPING MLS GAME >> The MLS All-Star Game will feature one of the world’s most storied clubs. Unfortunately for the more than 70,000 fans expected at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo is not along for the ride.

After Portugal’s elimination from the World Cup and his transfer from Real Madrid, the five-time FIFA Player of the Year took time off rather than accompany Juventus on its American preseason tour, which includes Wednesday night’s game against top players from Major League Soccer.

The decision will surely be a disappointment to the big crowd that had hoped Ronaldo would make his unofficial debut while touring the United States with the Italian club that has won seven straight Serie A championships.
