Cabrillo honors Corigliano
As its name suggests, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music is all about new and recent works. But the highlight of this weekend’s clos80-year-old ing performances may be a piece that dates back 50 years. Saturday’s concert, titled “Notes from a Journey,” features the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by John Corigliano, the Grammy-, Oscar- and Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer best known for his symphonies, chamber works and the opera “The Ghosts of Versailles.” Conducted by Cabrillo music director Cristian Măcelaru, the concerto is being presented as a tribute to the 80-year-old Corigliano; the soloist is English pianist Philip Edward Fisher, making his first Cabrillo appearance. The program also includes the world premiere of “Hypercolor” by Korean-American composer Peter Shin. Sunday’s festival finale, “Of Other Worlds,” introduces three West Coast premieres: Pierre Jalbert’s “In Terra,” Michael Gandolfi’s “The Garden of Cosmic Speculation Part I” and Nico Muhly’s “Impossible Things,” featuring tenor Nicholas Phan and violinist Justin Bruns. Missy Mazzoli’s “Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres)” completes the lineup. Details: 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium; $37-$65; 831-426-6966, www.cabrillomusic.org.
