Humphry Slocombe pop-up rolls into Concord

-

San Francisco cult favorite Humphry Slocombe is sending ice cream scoopers to Concord for two months.

In a partnership with the Whole Foods 365 markets, “Betty,” the creamery’s truck, will roll into Concord this week and hang out for a few days every week in August and September.

Betty will be stationed at the store from 2 to 8 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Scoops of ice cream will be sold at the truck (including the new yuzu flavor and Slocombe’s signature Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee, Honey Graham and Secret

Breakfast) while pints will be available for purchase inside the store.

Secret Breakfast — perhaps Humphry Slocombe’s most famous flavor — combines a base of ice cream made with bourbonsteeped vanilla beans with cornflakes. Take that, Kellogg’s.

The Whole Foods 365 is located at 2085 Diamond Blvd. at the Veranda center.

Asian Box opens at Campbell’s Pruneyard

Asian Box, the chefdriven, fast-casual concept inspired by Vietnamese street food stalls, has opened at the Pruneyard in Campbell.

The chain’s been steadily expanding since 2012, when the trio of executive chef Grace Nguyen (formerly of the Slanted Door in San Francisco), culinary director Chad Newton (formerly of Fish & Farm, he grew up in Mountain View) and CEO Frank Klein put together a sustainable, gluten-free menu of stir-fry boxes.

They launched the company at Town & Country Village in Palo Alto. Since then, they’ve grown to include locations in Mountain View, Burlingame, North San Jose and San Francisco — plus four in Southern California.

At Asian Box, customers choose a base (rice, noodles or vegetable salad), then a protein (six-spice chicken, lemongrass-marinated pork, coconut curry tofu, lime-basil shrimp or garlic/ soy-glazed beef), then veggies (steamed or spiced), a house-made sauce (Sriracha, tamarind, fish sauce and more) and toppers (like jalapeños, crispy shallots, bean sprouts and peanuts). Beverages include Vietnamese iced coffee and lemon and lime marmalade.

Signature boxes that require no decision-making are available too.

DETAILS >> Campbell’s Asian Box is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. most nights (until 8 p.m. Sunday) at 1875 S. Bascom Ave., at the rear of the center. www.asianbox.com.
