Man who assaulted his mom dies after struggle with officers
REDWOOD CITY >> A 55-yearold man suspected of assaulting his 83-year-old mother Monday night and then attacking the first officer who responded to their home off Redwood Shores Parkway died after a struggle with police, authorities said.
The incident unfolded at about 7:20 p.m. when a neighbor called 911 to report a man was assaulting his mother and threatening to kill her in front of their home in the 500 block of Lanyard Drive, Redwood City police said in a release late Tuesday morning.
The caller said neighbors tried to physically restrain the man, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
The first officer who arrived attempted to help the woman but was “immediately attacked” by the son and a “struggle ensued,” police said.
When more officers arrived they attempted to detain the man, who resisted.
During the struggle, the man became unconscious.
Officers and paramedics at the scene attempted livesaving measures on the suspect, who was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified him as Ramsey Saad, 55, of Redwood City.
The incident is being investigated by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, per county protocol.
The four officers who attempted to restrain the suspect were placed on administrative leave, standard procedure in this type of incident, police said.
