Brewers not counting on return of Nelson

-

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Jimmy Nelson’s possibility of returning this season is “unlikely.”

Nelson, 29, had shoulder surgery last September after he got hurt diving back to first after rounding the base on a single. It was a tough conclusion to a breakout year for the right-hander, who went 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts.

Mets’ Nimmo comes close to cycle

Brandon Nimmo went 5 for 5 with three RBIs in the Mets’ 16-5 win over Baltimore. New York’s leadoff hitter had two cracks at completing the cycle after going single, double, double, triple in his first four at-bats. He was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning and wrapped up his night with a single in the ninth.

“I really was thinking that five hits would be pretty cool, too. Same with getting on base six times,” Nimmo said. “When I got that last hit I was ecstatic. Nights like these, you kind of just want to bottle up and live with them forever.”

Around the majors

• The Mariners placed ace James Paxton on the disabled list with a forearm bruise, one day after the left-hander was struck by a line drive by the A’s Jed Lowrie. Paxton is 10-5, including a no-hitter against Toronto, and a 3.68 ERA.

• Yankees GM Brian Cashman said the threeweek time frame the team had outlined three weeks ago for Aaron Judge’s return from a wrist injury was overly optimistic. “We thought maybe three weeks would cover it, but it’s going to be longer than that,” Cashman said.

• The Houston Astros, who routed Colorado 12-1, stopped a nine-game home losing streak with their first victory in Houston since July 14. The Astros’ last nine victories have all been on the road.

• Washington right-hander Jeremy Hellickson was removed from the game in St. Louis in the fifth inning after colliding with Cardinals outfielder Harrison Bader at the plate.
