As the car turns

Most of us have watched vehicles on rotating turntables at auto shows, but there’s a practical side to them as well. San Diego-based Carturner builds its patented stainlesssteel turntables for both indoor and outdoor use. They are especially handy in tight driveways or in garages where maneuvering your vehicle is difficult. The company also has professional applications, such as for commercial photographers. Installation is a relatively simple process since the 15-foot diameter Carturner installs on top of your driveway or floor. Prices start at $12,000 for brushed or powder-coated finishes, and $13,000 for the mirrorfinish version, excluding shipping. Prices include programmable wireless controls. Staying ‘alert’ on the road

If you end up in a crash or other emergency situation, the Geko PanicSafe locater can notify anyone you want, instantly. It stays plugged into your vehicle’s 12-volt receptacle while you drive. When an impact is detected, or at the press of a button, the unit will alert up to seven different contacts of your choice, such as friends, family members and emergency services. The PanicSafe will also notify your contacts if you deactivate the alert. In addition, the built-in GPS tracking (which works when paired with a smart phone) keeps tabs on your location, even if your vehicle is shut off. The PanicSafe comes with two USB quick-charge outlets. Get yours for $80 from www.stacksocial.com or www.amazon.com.

Ford’s final chapter

One of the most fascinating and controversial industrialists of any time in history, Henry Ford literally put North Americans on wheels with his sturdy and affordable Model T. Much has been written about the man’s early beginnings, but author Henry Dominguez, who has written extensively about the company and its founder, has chronicled Ford’s final years leading up to his death on April 7, 1947, of a cerebral hemorrhage. “The Last Days of Henry Ford,” has more than 100 photos, including the only known color image of Henry Ford. Wristwatch gauges

Timedrivers specializes in watches that are influenced by the look of automobile and motorcycle gauges from the 1940s and ’50s.

For example, the Stewart Warnerstyle Deluxe watch (one of several unique styles) features a simple and elegant design patterned after classic car speedometers from bygone eras. The watch is described as having a machined-stainless-steel bezel that surrounds the 47-millimeter face, and an internal mechanism that consists of a shock-resistant quartz movement. The Deluxe comes with a mediumgrain leather strap and is priced at $100, while other styles sell for up to $400. Check out the full array at www. TimeDrivers.com.
