SAN JOSE >> Splunk has mounted a hiring spree in the Bay Area — with plans to add thousands of workers — in the wake of big leases in San Jose and San Francisco, the fast-growing tech company said Tuesday.

The San Francisco-based software company plans to hire 2,000 people in the Bay Area following its leasing deals in the region.

“The more Splunkers the merrier,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said Tuesday in an interview. “It’s exciting to see Splunk expand its presence in San Jose.”

In August, Splunk signed a lease for 301,000 square feet at an under-construction San Jose office building, 700 Santana Row. The tech company’s newly leased site is a short walk from its current San Jose location at 500 Santana Row, a 235,000-square-foot building that Splunk will continue to rent.

“We’re thrilled to continue our expansion in San Francisco and San Jose and proud to be bringing thousands of jobs to the Bay Area,” Doug Merritt, Splunk’s chief executive officer, said in comments posted Tuesday on the

company’s website.

Splunk’s addition of 2,000 employees represents a huge upswing in staffing for the company. Splunk now employs approximately 4,000 employees worldwide, company spokesman Tom Stilwell said Tuesday.

At present, Splunk employs 1,500 in the Bay Area, Stilwell said.

With the lease at Santana Row, Splunk will occupy a total of 536,000 square feet in San Jose. The company also recently signed a leasing deal in San Francisco on Brannan Street, and now occupies two buildings on that street.

The Santana Row deals also mean that San Jose will be home to Splunk’s largest campus, once the company

moves into 700 Santana Row, the company said.

“As Splunk continues to grow and hire across the company, it is critical we provide our employees the best possible work environment,” Merritt said.

Splunk makes software that seeks out, collects and analyzes an array of data.

Other companies that have expanded their footprints in San Jose in a big way lately include Samsung, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Bloom Energy, Nio USA, 8X8 and Roku.

“The Splunk expansion and new hiring offers an alternative place to work for some of the tens of thousands of commuters who are trapped on Highway 101 as they try to reach jobs far to the north,” Mayor Liccardo said.
