HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN DISASTER SUPPLY KIT

-

A basic emergency supply kit should include the following, preferably packed in plastic bins or duffel bags, in case you need to grab it and go. Try to have separate kits stored at home, at work and in your car.

Here’s what you need:

• One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.

• Three days worth of nonperishable food.

• A battery-powered or hand-crank radio.

• Flashlight.

• First-aid kit.

• Extra batteries.

• Whistle to signal for help.

• Dust mask to help filter contaminated air.

• Plastic sheeting and duct tape in case you need to shelter in place.

• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.

• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities such as gas, if need be.

• Manual can opener for food.

• Local maps.

• Cellphone with chargers and a backup battery. Bonus tips:

• Maxi-Pads can be used as a wound compress with duct tape to stop bleeding.

• Playing cards won’t just pass the time: You can make a finger splint with a card and some duct tape.

• Mouthwash can be used as an antiseptic to clean wounds.

• Don’t forget things such as pet food or contact lens solution if those are necessities in your life.
