Familiar faces show up in new places

You’ll surely recognize their faces, if not their personalit­ies. This fall, several familiar television stars are back in front of the camera and hoping you’ll pledge your allegiance to their new shows. In some cases, they’ll be playing very different characters. Will we embrace them as we did before?

HIS NEW ROLE >> Big Tony, a rule-breaking former NYPD officer. He lives with his son, TJ (Josh Groban), a brilliant, straightla­ced, over-cautious cop. Conflict occurs.

NATHAN FILLION “The Rookie,” ABC

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HIM >> “Castle,” “Firefly”

HIS NEW ROLE >> John Nolan, a divorced single dad who, at 40, seeks to start his life over by becoming a Los Angeles police officer. As the department’s oldest rookie, he confronts plenty of skepticism.

DAVID GIUNTOLI “A Million Little Things,” ABC

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HIM >> “Grimm” HIS NEW ROLE >> Eddie Saville, a member of a group of friends who come together to mourn the suicide of one of their own. He’s a former rock musician with seven years of sobriety under his belt and a secret that could torpedo his seemingly happy life.

JENNIFER GARNER “Camping,” HBO

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER >> “Alias” HER NEW ROLE >> Kathryn, an obsessivel­y organized and aggressive­ly controllin­g wife and mom who has planned a family-and-friends camping trip for her husband’s birthday. Unfortunat­ely, it turns into a hellish experience.

VICKI LAWRENCE “The Cool Kids,” Fox

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER >> “The Carol Burnett Show”

HER NEW ROLE >> Margaret, a brash, confident and occasional­ly naughty woman who bursts her way into the long-establishe­d boys club in a retirement community. She’s joined in the cast by a couple of other very familiar stars — David Alan Grier and Martin Mull.

JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT “9-1-1,” Fox

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER >> “Party of Five,” “Ghost Whisperer,” “The Client List”

HER NEW ROLE >> Maddie, the sister of firefighte­r Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark). She’s seeking a fresh start as a 911 operator. Hewitt replaces Connie Britton, who left the show after its first season.
