New film fest debuts in Silicon Valley

A festival devoted to stories of South Asia and the Asian diaspora will hold its inaugural showcase of films today through Friday in Silicon Valley.

The Bay Area South Asian Film Festival, with an emphasis on the intersecti­on of entertainm­ent and technology, will present 16 movies, including four world premieres and four North America premieres, at venues in Palo Alto and Mountain View.

Among the screenings will be the Sony Pictures’s production of “The Extraordin­ary Journey of the Fakir,” about a street magician’s journey from Mumbai to find his father; “22 Yards,” the story of a young cricket player and a sports agent; “Nobleman,” a loss of innocence tale; “Spring Thunder,” which explores the world of a uranium miner on India’s highest plateau; and “The Song of Scorpions,” a story of revenge and redemption.

When classic rock attacks

It’s a huge week for music in the Bay Area, highlighte­d by two enticing classic-rock bills set for AT&T Park in San Francisco. Here’s a look:

Eagles: The band released two albums in 1976 (“Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975″ and “Hotel California”) that have sold more copies than even some very successful acts have sold in their entire careers. “Greatest Hits 1971-1975” is the top-selling album of all time in the U.S. “Hotel California” is No. 3. Wow. The Eagles perform today at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Rounding out the bill are country-rockers Zac Brown Band and San Jose’s own the Doobie Brothers. Journey and Def Leppard: Just can’t get enough classic rock? Then head back to AT&T Park on Sept. 21 for local band Journey and Def Leppard’s co-headlining show. J Balvin: The reggaeton star, known for such hits as “Ay Vamos,” “Ginza,” “Bobo,” “Mi Gente” and “I Like It,” performs today at Oracle Arena in Oakland. Details: 8 p.m.; $39.95-$129.95; ticketmast­er.com.

Slim’s 30th anniversar­y: The landmark San Francisco club continues to celebrate its 30th anniversar­y. Upcoming shows include ska-pop act The Aquabats (7 p.m. tiday; $30 advance/$32 door) and the Blues & Soul Revue featuring Elvin Bishop, Sugaray Rayford, Wee Willie Walker, Terrie Odabi and The Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra (7:30 p.m. Friday, $50 advance/door).
