New quarterbac­k gets Irish off and running

Ian Book rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two more, and No. 8 Notre Dame (4-0) beat Wake Forest 56-27 on Saturday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Book replaced Brandon Wimbush in the starting lineup and was 25 of 34 for 325 yards with touchdown passes covering 3 yards to Brock Wright and 7 yards to Chase Claypool, along with three short scoring runs. Stanford travels to South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday to face the Irish.

He helped the Fighting Irish more than double their previous season high for scoring and roll up a season-best 566 total yards, surpassing the previous high midway through the third quarter.

OLD DOMINION STUNS HOKIES >> Blake LaRussa came off the bench to throw for 495 yards and four touchdowns in Norfolk, Virginia, to lead Old Dominion to a 49-35 upset of No. 13 Virginia Tech in the Hokies’ first game at the cross-state school that restarted its football program in 2009. LaRussa entered on ODU’s second series and completed 30 of 49 and ran for a score to lead the 28 1/2-point underdog Monarchs (1-3) to a stunning win over the Hokies (2-1) from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Led by LaRussa and Cox, ODU finished with 632 yards of offense.

BLACK KNIGHTS SCARE SOONERS >> Kyler Murray threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to CeeDee Lamb in overtime, and Parnell Motley intercepte­d Kelvin Hopkins’ fourth-down pass to help No. 5 Oklahoma (40) escape with a 28-21 victory over Army in Norman. The Black Knights (2-2) had the ball for 44:41 and ran 87 plays to Oklahoma’s 40. Murray passed for 123 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 40 yards and another score.

Texas (3-1) had been outscored 153-33 the last four years by TCU and trailed 16-10 before the defense forced three turnovers by quarterbac­k Shawn Robinson in the third quarter.

The victory gives Texas its first three-game win streak since 2014.

The Longhorns also have their first back-toback wins over ranked opponents since winning three in a row in 2008, a run that vaulted Texas to No. 1 that season.

COMMENT ABOUT BLACK QUARTERBAC­KS >> A white Texas school superinten­dent who posted online that “You can’t count on a black quarterbac­k” in reference to Houston Texans quarterbac­k Deshaun Watson has resigned. In a letter Saturday to the Onalaska (Texas) Independen­t School District board, Lynn Redden said his comment posted earlier in the week on the Houston Chronicle’s Facebook page was “wrong and inappropri­ate.”

He also apologizes to Watson, who is black, and points out that Watson could have criticized him for his comment but instead “chose peace and positivity.”

TAYLOR RUNS WILD AS ARIZONA THRASHES OREGON STATE >> J.J. Taylor rushed for a Reser Stadium-record 284 yards and two touchdowns, including a 62-yard sprint, as visiting Arizona (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12) ran wild over Oregon State (1-3, 0-1) 35-14 in Corvallis. Arizona outgained Oregon State 594 yards to 238.
