Tway takes Safeway Open in playoff

Kevin Tway made a 10foot birdie putt on the third hole of a playoff Sunday to win the season-opening Safeway Open in Napa for his first PGA Tour title.

The son of eight-time PGA Tour winner Bob Tway, the 30-year-old former Oklahoma State player beat Ryan Moore on the par-4 10th after Brandt Snedeker dropped out on their second extra trip down the par-5 18th.

After strong wind died down in the late afternoon on Silverado’s tree-lined North Course, Tway birdied the final two holes in regulation for a 1-under 71, then birdied all three holes in the playoff.

Moore birdied three of the last four in a 67. Snedeker had four back-nine bogeys in a 74. ELLIOTT CLINCHES SPOT IN NEXT PLAYOFF ROUND >> Chase Elliott had been burdened by lofty expectatio­ns that come as the son of a Hall of Fame driver and the replacemen­t of a fourtime NASCAR champion.

As the close calls and frustratin­g finishes mounted, the 22-year-old Elliott could feel the pressure tighten each time he slipped into the No. 9 Chevrolet. But once Elliott raced to his first Cup win, the second victory wasn’t far behind.

“There isn’t any reason why we can’t make a run at this deal,” Elliott said about the Cup championsh­ip.

Elliott stayed off pit road during a late caution and avoided similar disasters that struck the Stewart-Haas Racing drivers to pull away and win in overtime at Dover (Del.) Internatio­nal Speedway. Elliott earned an automatic berth into the next round of the NASCAR Cup playoffs. TORRENCE WINS HOME NHRA RACE >> Steve Torrence won the AAA Texas NHRA Nationals at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas, for his third straight victory to open the playoffs and first career win in his home event. Torrence beat Terry McMillen in the final with a 3.786-second pass at 325.92 mph. Torrence has eight victories this season.

HAMILTON CRUISES TO WIN >> Lewis Hamilton stormed to victory at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, Japan, claiming his fourth straight Formula One win and moving a step closer to a fifth world championsh­ip. Starting from pole, the Mercedes driver was never seriously challenged and crossed the finish line 12.919 seconds ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas.
