SAN JOSE >> A woman killed in a street racing crash in San Jose Tuesday has been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as 49-year-old Lorraine Garcia.
Garcia and another passenger were in a taxicab turning left from Rancho Drive onto southbound Monterey Road about 6:30 a.m. when a Chevrolet truck broadsided their vehicle. Authorities said the truck was racing a Volkswagen Jetta at the time.
Garcia was thrown from the taxi and rushed to the hospital, where she died a short time later.
The second passenger was also taken to the hospital and treated for serious internal injuries, including a ruptured aorta, punctured lung, lacerated liver, and bleeding in his kidney and spleen.
The cab driver was not injured.
Authorities arrested the Chevrolet truck driver at the scene. He was identified as Jose Castillo-Campos, 24, of San Jose. Neither he nor his 2-year-old son, who was riding with him, were injured.
The second driver — identified as Cesar Ramos Navarro, 22, of San Jose — was arrested at his home the same day.
Both men were booked into Santa Clara County Jail on charges of manslaughter and exhibition of speed. Castillo-Campos was booked on an additional charge of child endangerment.
The collision marked the city’s 37th traffic fatality of the year. The same number of roadway deaths were recorded at the same point in 2017.
Anyone with information about the collision can contact Detective Troy Sirmons at 408-2774654.
