Lopez gets involved in Rodriguez’s child support proceedings
Jennifer Lopez has inserted herself into the sensitive child-support negotiations between Alex Rodriguez and his ex-wife, Cynthia Scurtis, including by pushing her boyfriend to reduce his monthly payments, the New York Post reported.
Lopez, 49, attended a Sept. 13 mediation between the retired New York Yankees slugger and Scurtis, the Post said. Her presence at the legal proceeding left Scurtis blindsided, and the mediation became contentious.
At one point, Lopez even insisted her 43-year-old boyfriend leave the room. The Post, citing an interview with Scurtis, suggested that Lopez’s presence is part of her latest effort to “take the reins” in a relationship. In this case, Lopez is encouraging her boyfriend to assert more financial control with his ex-wife by reducing his child support payments.
Rodriguez, who is worth an estimated $300 million and earned more than $400 million in his MLB career, wants to pay around $10,000 a month to Scurtis. TMZ said last month that Rodriguez currently pays Scurtis $115,000 a month, tax free, in combined spousal and child support.
Scurtis’ attorney told the Post the $115,000 figure is “grossly inaccurate.” Nonetheless, “(Lopez) is driving the bus,” a source said about the singer’s influence on Rodriguez, according to the Post.
The Sept. 13 mediation session was supposed to continue the next day, but was canceled because things got so heated, the Post said.
Rodriguez and Scurtis were married from 2002 to 2008 and are parents of two daughters. They divorced amid cheating rumors, Miami.com reported. Rodriguez and Lopez began dating in the spring of 2017.
Rodriguez has long tried to present himself as a loving, devoted, hands-on father, regularly sharing photos of himself with his daughters on Instagram.
In a rare comment last week, Scurtis said that she and her ex-husband had long enjoyed a friendly arrangement over child custody and support — until recently. “Everybody got along,” Scurtis told the Post. “Everything was fine. This is all new.”
