HOW YOU CAN HELP

- — Neil Chase, Executive Editor

Dear Reader,

As we approach the holidays, many of us pause to reflect on our gratitude for family, friends and good fortune. But we’re also moved right now by what seems like an endless stream of challenges for our neighbors, from fires and natural disasters to healthcare and financial difficulties. That’s why I hope you’ll join me in helping them through the Mercury News Wish Book. Over the next few weeks, our journalists will introduce you to people like foster teen Kevelyn Duarte, who’s been getting her life on track with the help of her Court Appointed Special Advocate, and is looking forward to graduating from high school this spring. You’ll get to know Angelina Garcia, who is struggling to find stable housing but who is determined to create a better life for her daughter, Genesis. And you’ll find out how Silicon Valley Independent Living helped Ferdinand Mangaoang’s family care for him at home after a debilitating stroke.

As you learn more about these people and how our community can support them, I hope you’ll be moved to make a generous tax-deductible contribution and join the many Mercury News readers who have donated more than $10 million over the years to give the gift of hope to people like Kevelyn and Ferdinand.

On behalf of the hundreds of people who work every day to bring you The Mercury News, I wish you and your family the best this holiday season.
