World champ Chen wins French skate

World champion Nathan Chen won the last round of figure skating’s Grand Prix series and secured a spot in next month’s final with a pulsating free skate at the Internatio­naux de France in Grenoble.

The American skater outclassed the field in scoring 184.64 for an eventwinni­ng total of 271.58. He won by 15 points. Victory ensured him a spot in the Dec. 6-9 final in Vancouver, British Columbia, reserved for the top six skaters or pairs in each discipline from the Grand Prix series.

On the women’s side, 16-year-old Rika Kihira was a convincing winner, with a free skate packed with triple jumps and grace. The Japanese skater booked her finals berth with an overall score of 205.92.

WOODS-MICKELSON MATCH >> Turner’s B/R Live brand is offering a refund to those who experience­d technical difficulti­es during the Phil Mickelson-Tiger Woods pay-per-view match in Las Vegas. B/R Live said that it would offer refunds. Charter Spectrum, Cox Communicat­ions, Dish/Sling TV and AT&T via its DirecTV and U-Verse platforms also announced refunds.

Technical difficulti­es marred the event, which was billed as golf’s first pay-per-view broadcast.

Some viewers unable to view it on their television­s after paying $19.95. Turner and Bleacher Report representa­tives sent out links on social media allowing people to view it for free on their computers and mobile devices. Mickelson won Friday’s match over Woods on the fourth playoff hole to win $9 million.

COPA LIBERTADOR­ES FINAL

POSTPONED AFTER BOCA BUS ATTACKED >> Argentines expected the final of the century. Instead, they were witnesses to one of the biggest embarrassm­ents in South American football history. The Copa Libertador­es final in Buenos Aires was postponed to today after Boca Juniors players were injured when their bus was attacked by River Plate fans.

CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez announced the decision on Saturday, only 10 minutes before the final was supposed to start.

Boca players were injured in their bus just five streets from River’s Monumental de Nunez Stadium when rocks and pieces of wood thrown by River supporters shattered the windows.

FRANCE CLINGS TO HOPE IN DAVIS CUP >> Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert kept French hopes alive in the Davis Cup final with a 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3) win over Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic in the doubles in Lille, France. Croatia now leads France 2-1 as it chases its first Davis Cup title since 2005 and needs one win the final two singles matches today.

KART RACER SUSTAINS FATAL

INJURY AT SONOMA RACEWAY >> A 65-year old Manteca resident died after an on-track crash at Sonoma Racewa. The unidentifi­ed man was competing in a one-day Northern California Karters (NCK) event on the raceway’s primary 12-turn road course. The single-kart accident, in which the kart spun and flipped in Turn 8, occurred during race No. 2 for the Superkart IC/E (Interconti­nental E) division.
