Setting the record straight
• A story on the front page Nov. 30about an investigation into some former Stanford University wrestlers’ allegations that a university math lecturer routinely leered at them in the showers incorrectly reported the wrestlers’ contention about what their coaches knew. Five former wrestlers told this news organization that their coaches were present when wrestlers described how men frequently stared at them in the showers years ago in a locker room that was open to the rest of the campus. One of those wrestlers, Drew Martinez, identified former head coach Steve Buddie and assistant coach Jay Jackson as having heard his teammates’ jokes and references to the staring, but he is unsure whether the wrestlers formally brought their concerns to the coaches or what the coaches knew about the extent of the behavior. And neither Martinez nor the other wrestlers recalled whether any of the coaches were specifically aware of the alleged conduct of the math lecturer, Hung Le. Both Buddie and Jackson said they were not aware of their wrestlers’ concerns. On Friday after the article was published, Stanford University announced the results of the investigation into Le’s behavior, concluding that he made some wrestlers uncomfortable, but that there was insufficient evidence to support a finding of sexual harassment.
