SAN JOSE >> Detectives are investigating two overnight shootings that left one man dead and one man injured early Saturday, according to San Jose police.

There is no known connection between the shootings, which were reported about 6 miles apart, police said.

The first instance was reported at 9:50 p.m. Friday in the 1500 block of Almaden Expressway south of Alma Avenue when officers were called to help the Fire Department respond to an emergency call, police said. They found a man near a liquor store suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where he died soon after, police said. His name has not been released pending formal identification and notification of his next of kin.

Around 1:20 a.m. Saturday, police were called to the 5400 block of Monterey Road, just north of Blossom Hill Road, for another shooting report. Officers there found a man suffering from at least gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

No suspects have been identified in either shooting. The fatal attack on Almaden Expressway marked the city’s 27th homicide of the year. At the same point last year, San Jose had recorded 31 homicides on the way to a total of 34. That is behind the pace of 2016, which recorded 47 homicides in what constituted a 25-year high in slayings for the city.
