A structure fire that broke out at the rear of the Tesla factory site Saturday was contained quickly by Fremont Fire Department crews, officials said.

The blaze was first reported around 8:25 p.m. at the factory site, which is on the 45500 block of Fremont Blvd.

The fire started in a 10 foot by 10 foot area containing hazardous waste near an exterior storage area, according to Fremont Deputy Fire Chief Amiel Thurston.

As a result, the Fire Department sent a hazardous materials unit to help contain the fire, he said.

Crews appeared to be focusing their attention and water hoses on an area between a large production tent on the Tesla site and some outbuildings.

Thurston said firefighters worked to move any items not on fire away from the flames and monitored the atmosphere for hazardous compounds while working to contain the fire.

Late Saturday, factory workers were seen milling about and forklifts drove around the rear of the factory not far from where fire engines and fire staff vehicles were staged.

A high-pitched alarm was heard squealing around the premises for an extended period of time.

The fire was contained quickly enough that it was not a threat to the factory, Thurston said.

A Tesla spokesperson confirmed Sunday to the Bay Area News Group that the fire did not affect production at the factory but wouldn’t share further details about incident.
