SAN JOSE >> One man was killed and another was critically injured after an SUV hit two bicyclists near West Capitol Expressway on Monday morning, according to police.

The collision was reported at 7:43 a.m. when a gray Chevy SUV pulled out of the parking lot of a Bonfare Market onto southbound Vistapark Drive and struck the bicyclists, who were traveling in the same direction, Officer Gina Tepoorten said.

Both bicyclists were rushed to a hospital, where one died. The other remains hospitalized with what police described as life-threatening injuries.

After the collision, the woman driving the SUV stopped and cooperated with police, Tepoorten said. She added that there was no indication the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol.

The bicyclist who died was not named by authorities pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin.

The collision marked the city’s 26th traffic death of the year and the third involving a bicyclist.

Police said Vistapark Drive would be closed indefinitely Monday while officers investigate.

The collision comes months after San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, an avid cyclist, suffered multiple fractures when he broadsided an SUV during a ride.

No additional details were immediately available Monday morning.
