$1.4 million Mega Millions lottery ticket sold at convenience store
It was the second local store to win big in the past two weeks
For the second time in the past two weeks, a San Jose convenience store has sold a winning lottery ticket worth more than $1 million, according to the California Lottery.
The 7-Eleven store at 1639 Alum Rock Ave. in San Jose sold one lucky player a ticket with all five winning numbers in the Mega Millions drawing Tuesday night, earning the ticket holder an estimated $1,479,091 before federal taxes.
The five winning numbers were 1, 4, 23, 40 and 45. The ticket owner missed the Mega number, 11, which was needed to win the full $168 million prize.
But a ticket with all six winning numbers for Tuesday’s drawing was sold in New Hampshire, according to the Mega Millions organization. That winner could opt to receive a $108.5 million lump sum payment.
The store manager at the 7-Eleven said a lottery official informed him of the news early Wednesday.
“It was so close to winning the Mega, I just wish they would have done it,” the manager said of the local ticket.
“That would have been awesome for the customer.”
Retailers that sell a winning ticket with a prize payment of $1 million or more are entitled to a one-half percent bonus of the prize value, according to the lottery website, which means the 7-Eleven store could receive an estimated $7,000.
Tuesday’s winning lottery ticket wasn’t the first for a San Jose 7-Eleven in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, a $1.2 million Powerball ticket was sold at the 7-Eleven store at 5148 Moorpark Ave. in San Jose.
The next Mega Millions drawing will take place Friday with a top prize of at least $40 million.
