Players mimic Sandoval with Pablo pizzazz

- By Gary Peterson gpeterson@bayareanewsgroup.com

The Giants undertook a dangerous and difficult mission after Sunday’s win over the Padres in San Diego:

Mimic Pablo Sandoval’s sartorial “look” for the flight to Philadelphia.

Dangerous because it remains an open question whether Sandoval, the team’s muse, Swiss army knife and emotional thermostat, actually has a “look.”

Hey, the guy broke a belt while swinging a bat for the Red Sox a few years back, OK?

And difficult because it’s no easy task to pull off this kind of teambuilding experience on the fly. The Giants were on the road, where most of a ballplayer’s time is typically spent at the ballpark, sleeping, or grabbing room service.

It appears the team went 2 for 2, both identifying a Sandoval “look” and securing the civvies to make it happen.

First things first. According to NBC Sports Bay Area, Sandoval exited the clubhouse wearing tight jeans, a long white shirt, and bright bedazzled shoes.” Also three gold neck chains that, just guessing here, could have served as docking ropes for the Queen Mary.

NBCsports.com also reported that the Giants visited a Gucci store in San Diego and availed themselves of Amazon to complete their Sandoval dress-a-like duds. Some of the most popular items were “white jeans, red pants, bright printed shirts and the gaudiest jewelry players could find.”

No matter how ridiculous some of these guys looked — Buster Posey with oversized diamond stud earrings, Brandon Crawford in white skinny jeans — it was an improvement on tradition. For years, there were hazing flights on which rookies would have to cross-dress, dress in provocative or juvenile and/or cartoon motifs on commercial flights. MLB banned that practice in 2017.
