SAN JOSE >> A suspect was arrested following an hours-long search for a man with a gun at San Jose State University.

At about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, San Jose police officers were dispatched to the area of East Santa Clara and North 2nd streets for a report of a man who had brandished a gun.

Arriving officers spotted a possible suspect, who ran onto the campus in the area of South 4th and West San Carlos streets. SJSU and SJPD officers searched for the suspect in the Spartan Complex, according to university spokeswoman Robin McElhatton.

About 8:20 p.m., authorities said a suspect was in custody. ABC7 News, this news organization’s media partner, reported that the suspect was arrested on the third floor of the building, which houses athletic locker rooms, the kinesiology department and an indoor pool. Officers escorted three females who were inside the building to safety.

Authorities took Joshua Castro, 23, into custody using pepper spray, according to a SJPD spokeswoman. Castro was transported to a local hospital for treatment and then booked into the Santa Clara County jail for resisting arrest, being a felon in possession of a firearm and parole violation, Officer Gina Tepoorten said in an email.

The suspect did not have a weapon when he was arrested, but one was later located off-campus, according to police.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for the campus during the search. It was lifted after the suspect was in custody.
