CONCORD >> It took more than one try, but police finally caught a man they chased and chased and chased again.

Concord resident Alexander Piros, 27, is suspected of evading police, causing a hitand-run and driving under the influence, police spokesman Corp. David Petty said. Piros didn’t try to fight police when they finally arrested him Sunday night.

It all started around 8:10 p.m. when police received reports that a man driving on Oak Grove Road near Whitman Avenue was throwing beer out the window and weaving badly, Petty said.

An officer in a patrol vehicle saw the undisclosed car Piros is suspected of driving and tried to pull it over, with no success. Petty said the car sped away and led police on a short pursuit that officers called off after it reached high speeds on surface streets in Concord and Walnut Creek.

Police next checked where the car was registered and went to that neighborhood, where they later noticed the same man driving, Petty said. Another attempt to pull him over led to another pursuit on surface streets in Concord, Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek, he said.

During that pursuit, Piros is suspected of hitting a parked car. Nobody was injured. Petty said Piros tried to return to his home, and police again chased him. This time they laid a spike strip at the intersection of Oak Grove Road and Monument Boulevard, and the car went over it. It finally stopped at Market Street and Clayton Road, about 1 ½ miles away.

Police arrested him there and booked him into the county jail in Martinez. Jail records did not list him in custody Monday.
