Hall of Fame manager Herzog recovering after minor stroke

Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog is recovering from a minor stroke.

The 87-year-old Herzog became ill Monday at his charity golf tournament at Forest Hills Country Club in suburban St. Louis.

The Cardinals say Herzog is “currently resting and doing well.”

Nicknamed “the White Rat,” Herzog had a 1,2811,125 record in 18 years as a major league manager with the Cardinals, Royals, Rangers and Angels.

Under Herzog’s direction, St. Louis won the championsh­ip in 1982 and also made it to the World Series in 1985 and 1987. Herzog was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

TEXAS TECH QB BOWMAN OUT SEVERAL WEEKS >> Texas Tech starting quarterbac­k Alan Bowman will miss several weeks because of a shoulder injury sustained Saturday night in a loss at Arizona, the school announced.

Bowman, a sophomore, was tended to on the sideline early in the second half after Wildcats linebacker Tony Fields II drove him into the turf onto his left shoulder. Bowman then went into the locker room but returned in time for Texas Tech’s next series and finished the game.

Bowman completed 30 of 55 passes for 311 yards, with one touchdown and two intercepti­ons, in the Red Raiders’ 28-14 loss. He is fourth nationally with 1,024 passing yards this season.

MICHIGAN STATE LOSES OFFENSIVE LINEMAN >> Michigan State offensive lineman Kevin Jarvis is expected to miss 6-7 weeks with an undisclose­d injury. Coach Mark Dantonio didn’t disclose the specifics of the injury. He said Jarvis isn’t lost for the season, but he has been removed from the depth chart after starting the first three games this season at left tackle.

EX-AUBURN WR CRAIG-MYERS ELIGIBLE AT COLORADO STATE >> Former Auburn wideout Nate Craig-Meyers is eligible to play for Colorado State this Saturday against Toledo. CraigMeyer­s caught 22 passes for 394 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games at Auburn, transferri­ng after the Tigers’ third game last September.

• Quarterbac­k Collin Hill has suffered a torn left ACL for the third time since 2016 and is out for the rest of the season, Colorado State coach Mike Bobo said. Hill was hit on the knee in the third quarter of Saturday’s 55-34 loss at Arkansas.

NEW MEXICO COACH DAVIE EXPECTS SEPT. 28 RETURN >> New Mexico (1-1) coach Bob Davie continues to recover from a serious medical issue and is expected to resume his in-game coaching duties on Sept. 28. Davie told reporters on Tuesday that he won’t coach in Saturday’s home game against New Mexico State (0-3). Offensive line coach Saga Tuitele will continue in his role as acting coach.

The 64-year-old Davie was hospitaliz­ed following the season-opening win on Aug. 31 against Sam Houston State. Neither the school nor the coach has disclosed the medical issue, but Davie has said doctors saved his life that day. TROY’S SMITH OUT FOR SEASON WITH KNEE INJURY >> Troy senior running back B.J. Smith reportedly tore his patellar tendon during the first half of the Trojans’ 47-42 loss to Southern Miss on Saturday, although the school did not confirm the exact nature of the injury.

Smith was voted the Sun Belt Conference’s preseason Offensive Player of the Year in 2018.

TOLBERT STICKING WITH KNBR >> Tom Tolbert apparently isn’t going anywhere for a while.

The popular radio sports-talk host and former Warriors forward has signed a multiyear contract extension with KNBR. The Athletic, citing a station source, reports that the new deal will keep Tolbert under contract for four more years from the date it was originally set to expire, in the middle of 2020.

Tolbert has been with KNBR since 1996 and currently co-hosts “Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks” with Larry Krueger and Rod Brooks weekdays from 2-6 p.m.

CARLO SIGNS, JOINS CAMP WITH BRUINS >> Free agent defenseman Brandon Carlo has signed a two-year extension to remain with the Boston Bruins. The deal will pay the 22-yearold Carlo $2.85 million per season. He had not been in camp since it opened last week and was the Bruins’ last remaining unsigned free agent.

ROSE IN DOUBT FOR BMW PGA CHAMPIONSH­IP >> Justin Rose, No. 4 in the world golf rankings, withdrew from Wednesday’s pro-am at the BMW PGA Championsh­ip, citing a knee injury.

“Last Thursday I slipped and jarred my knee,” Rose said in a statement. “I am doing everything I can to be fit to play on Thursday.”

The BMW PGA Championsh­ip, held at the Wentworth Club southwest of London, is considered the European Tour’s flagship event.

OGWUMIKE PRAISES SECURITY >> Chiney Ogwumike is praising the WNBA’s security after she and her sister were rushed by a fan following the Los Angeles Sparks playoff win on Sunday. Speaking before the Sparks’ semifinal game at Connecticu­t in Uncasville, Connecticu­t, on Tuesday, Ogwumike says security defused the situation “in the nick of time” and she and her sister, Nneka Ogwumike, both former Stanford stars, are fine.

The fan, a 28-year-old man, was charged with criminal trespass after he rushed toward the sisters while Nneka Ogwumike was doing an on-camera interview after the Sparks’ second-round win over Seattle.

In Tuesday’s game, Nneka Ogwumike scored 20 points, but Connecticu­t topped the Sparks 8475 to take the first game of the best-of-five semifinals. Game 2 is Thursday in Connecticu­t.

• Emma Meesseman and Elena Delle Donne combined for 51 points to lead the Washington Mystics past the Las Vegas Aces 97-95 in Washington, D.C. in the first game of their best-of-five WNBA semifinals series.

NEW YORK WINS LOTTERY, GETS NO. 1 PICK >> The New York Liberty won the WNBA lottery and will have the first pick in next spring’s draft. Dallas will pick second, Indiana third and Atlanta fourth. Oregon guard and Miramonte High product Sabrina Ionescu and Baylor forward Lauren Cox are among the leading prospects to be selected No. 1.

FEDERER TO DECIDE SOON ON TOKYO OLYMPIC PLANS >> Roger Federer says he will soon decide if he will play at next year’s Tokyo Olympics. Federer says his schedule is set through Wimbledon, which ends July 12. The Olympic tournament starts July 25 and ends a few days before his 39th birthday. Federer is a fourtime Olympian and twice carried Switzerlan­d’s flag at opening ceremonies.
